United Kingdom answers

Do I need maths to be a data analyst?

GCSE-level maths is enough for almost every junior data analyst role. You need to be comfortable with percentages, averages, and basic ratios. You do not need calculus, linear algebra, or any university maths. Most analysts last touched advanced maths a long time ago.

What maths actually shows up

Aggregations, ratios, growth rates, year-on-year changes, weighted averages. Comfort with the four-function calculator is the bar. Confidence with order of operations and percentage swings is the upgrade.

When statistics matter

Once you start running A/B tests or forecasting. By then you will be a mid-level analyst and you will pick up the statistics you need in a few weeks of dedicated reading.

What care workers, teachers, and admin staff already have

More than you think. Tracking medication doses, exam grades, or budget lines is the same shape of work analysts do daily.
